Are you and your job still a perfect match?

Is your usual energy and enthusiasm still the same?
Is there the right balance between the demands and expectations placed on you, and the capacities you have?

As we head into the summer holidays, we ask you some reflection questions that give you the opportunity to take the temperature of your job satisfaction.

The summer holiday and the time around it is for many a long-awaited break from everyday life – but which also provides an opportunity to assess the job and career.

Am I still working on the right thing? Am I satisfied and motivated when I go to work? Am I challenged enough?

It is often when we are away from work for longer periods that we really notice whether we thrive in everyday life. Therefore, it is also not uncommon for late summer to be peak season for job changes.

In a survey from Denmark, one in six people say that they expect to change jobs within a year, and as many as a third of these cite the desire for professional and personal development as a reason. Thus, this reason for a job change ends up in second place – only beaten by those who point to poor management as the cause.

When we recognize an imbalance in our professional life, changing jobs often seems like the right and easy solution.

However, this is not always the case. You risk bringing the problems with you to the new job if you fail to clarify the underlying reasons for the emerging dissatisfaction and crack the code for how to regain motivation and job satisfaction. You risk the problem simply relocating with you.

Continue reading to learn how to assess your job satisfaction and determine if you are (still) on the right career path.

Are you in control of your job, or is your job controlling you?

Besides the relationship with your partner, your job is the relationship in life where we invest the most time and effort.

The comparison is obvious. Just like the relationship with a partner, the job needs continuous attention and care.

It is important to pause occasionally and take stock: Does it still feel right? Is the pace too high or too low? And are we moving in the right direction?

In the same way as in a relationship, it is natural that we occasionally ask ourselves the questions:

«Are we still the best match?» «Or will I have a happier professional life in another job?»

Here are some questions you can ask yourself:

  1. What do I/we use the job for in my/our life?
  2. Is there a right balance between my work and everything else that is important in my life?
  3. Am I moving in the direction I want?
  4. Do I experience the exchange between what I contribute and what I achieve in my job as attractive?
  5. What gives me the freedom to do what I want – at work and in my professional life in general?
  6. What suggestions would I make to my employer to best utilize my skills? The best for me and the best for the company?
  7. What should be plan B if I cannot achieve plan A?

Your professional life, your responsibility!

To reflect and acknowledge is one thing. To act is another.

Therefore, you must, of course, follow up the reflections with action when you return from vacation. Otherwise, it is wasted energy.

Take yourself, your career, and your workplace seriously – present your proposals openly and honestly to your employer, with all the opportunities and perhaps risks it entails.

Once you have made an active decision to want to change something in your professional life, something magical happens. It starts and ends with yourself!
